As with any type of silencer design, a reactive silencer can provide a significant amount of attenuation within the balance of meeting other project goals for things like pressure drop, velocity targets and overall silencer size. A reactive silencer is commonly used for generators, blowers and other industrial equipment and unlike an absorptive silencer, does not contain any acoustic insulation. Reactive silencers are most commonly known as mufflers like those used for automobile exhaust. They provide noise attenuation (insertion loss) through a series of chambers and perforated tubes that change the area by design to reflect noise back to the source.
