Expert Repairs, Replacements, and Upgrades for Optimal Performance

SVI BREMCO has the experience and engineering capabilities in-house to provide anything from repairs, replacements, and upgrades for new or aftermarket gas turbine exhaust systems.

New or existing gas turbine power plants typically have simple (open) cycles, simple cycles with SCR and/or CO emissions systems, or combined cycles that have an HRSG (heat recovery steam boiler) and may also have emissions systems. Simple cycle exhaust systems are common in land-based, offshore, and mobile applications for either power generation or mechanical drive applications (like compressor stations).

Simple Cycle Exhaust System Components

Typically, a turbine exhaust system is used in a simple cycle application. Unlike a combined cycle, a simple cycle does not include an HRSG (heat recovery steam boiler). Typical simple cycle exhaust system components include:

  • An expansion joint at the turbine exhaust flange
  • Plenums and diffusers – Exhaust systems can include plenums and diffusers, which are usually based on the turbine design from the original equipment manufacturer (OEM), including GE, Siemens, and Solar.
  • Ductwork – This may include transitions into a stack or a run of horizontal ductwork that may include a silencer, depending on design requirements.
  • Stack – Main stacks are typically free-standing and sized based on aerodynamics to meet typical velocity requirements and permitted criteria.
  • Silencers – A simple cycle system does not contain items like boiler tubes in the gas path, which can help provide some insertion loss and attenuation. Simple cycle systems exhaust the gas turbine sound power levels directly out of the stack and, therefore, usually require a silencer to meet the project noise specifications.

Take Advantage of our Complimentary CT Exhaust Consultation

Please let us know when your next outage is so we can get inside the exhaust system and perform a basic visual inspection to review the condition of:

  • Expansion joints
  • Plenums and diffusers as applicable
  • Internal liner systems and external casing
  • Silencers
  • Ductwork and Stack
  • and other essential elements to keep your plant running.

We will leverage our experience to offer suggestions for future repairs, replacements or upgrades.

Combustion Turbine Exhaust System Design

SVI BREMCO specializes in optimizing the design of combustion turbine exhaust systems. Key features of an exhaust system design include:

  • Thermal design – an exhaust system's main goal is to safely take the turbine exhaust gas to the atmosphere. Depending on turbine exhaust temperatures, there are different ways to accomplish this, such as internally lined ductwork (cold casing design) or single wall ductwork, which may include external lagging to meet goals for external temperature targets. In order to ensure there is no leakage, these exhaust systems are sealed and welded at any joints. However, most exhaust systems are too large to fully shop assemble. Therefore, the joints that are made up in the field (field joints) become very important to ensure they are done properly and do not become hot spots.
  • Aerodynamics – exhaust from a turbine is violent and turbulent, which can make it difficult to optimize aerodynamics, which is needed to improve durability, reduce flow-induced vibration, and optimize flow for pressure drop and silencer performance.
  • Structural design – turbine exhaust systems are weldments, and the various components need to be reviewed for structural considerations. Everything from the liners to the silencers and the stacks must be designed by a structural engineer to ensure they meet project codes and that the equipment design life is adequate to meet project goals.

What is the Exhaust Stack?

An exhaust stack is a vital part of any power plant, ensuring safe emissions management and regulatory compliance. To maintain efficiency and prevent costly failures, routine inspections should be conducted at least annually, with more frequent assessments for high-use systems or those exposed to extreme conditions. Proper exhaust stack design and maintenance extend the lifespan of exhaust stacks, gas stacks, and industrial exhaust stacks, reducing downtime and safety risks.

Signs that your gas turbine exhaust stack or industrial exhaust stack may need repairs or upgrades include visible corrosion, cracks, structural instability, excessive vibration, unusual noises, or declining system performance.

Our team specializes in industrial exhaust stack design, repairs, and maintenance, ensuring your stack exhaust systems remain compliant, efficient, and reliable. Whether it’s a gas turbine stack or a full stack exhaust system, we provide expert inspections and tailored solutions to keep your operations running smoothly.
